Obituary

Dickey, Shelby S.
Died Sunday September 1st, 2019, in North Bay, Ontario as a result of injuries sustained in a cycling accident at the age of 24. Shelby of Singhampton, is dearly loved by her parents Rick and Keri Dickey, brother Braxton, partner Jordan Franks and their two dogs, Hoss and Ava, grandparents Myra (the late Greg Titus) and Liz (the late Jeep Dickey), aunts and uncles Kathy (the late Dan Reid), Kevin (Georgina) Titus, Cheri Rosen, Tanya (Bruce Green), Brett Titus (Lambrina Nikolaou), Kendra (Bill Laycock), Jim (Michelle) Dickey and Leah (Andy Jones) and cousins Chris Reid (Kathryn and Annabelle and Hazel), Shanda Reid, Morgan and Joren Titus, Kalli (Andy) and Kirsten Green, Alexander and Emily Laycock, Jamie, the late Candice and the late Gregory Dickey, Kevin (Ginger) Robert, Louis (Kerri) and Brent (Desiree) Burmister and Alyssa (Colin Calvert and Lily) and Rob Jones (Emily Delaney).
Shelby was born in Collingwood on September 30th, 1994. Shelby grew up in Stayner and later moved to Singhampton. She attended Collingwood Collegiate Institute and completed her Undergraduate degree at Nipissing University. She was 4 days away from defending her Master’s thesis on Environmental Stress in Relation to Athlete Performance and earning her Masters Degree of Human Physiology at Nipissing.
From a very young age, Shelby was a devoted cross country skier. Throughout her entire life, she spent countless hours in all seasons on Highlands Nordic’s trails. The time spent here helped whet her competitive appetite and she began racing on Highlands Trailblazer’s team at a young age. In high school, she competed as a strong member of the C.C.I. Nordic Ski team and had great success at the OFSAA championships she attended. Shelby was a varsity athlete on the Lakers Nordic Ski Team at Nipissing University where she had many accomplishments at the provincial, national and international levels. A highlight of her university ski career was representing Canada at the World University Games in Kazakhstan. Shelby respected all of her coaches from each level of her competing, but had particular regard for her Nipissing coaches of 6 years Toivo Koivukoski and Dr. Geoffry Hartley, who helped her through the duration of her masters.
Aside from her athletic accomplishments, Shelby earned a highly esteemed reputation in the ski community. She piloted a number of university ski camps and coached at countless other camps for younger athletes. Shelby had a generous heart and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. She would never back down from a challenge and met everything she did with full commitment and determination to be the best version of herself. Those who met her were immediately drawn to her positive spirit.
She was quick to laugh and always looking on the bright side. She was a fierce friend who would go above and beyond for her friends and family. Shelby was a free spirit with a drive to travel. She had a zest for life that was expressed through her work, training, personal life and travel. She had a passion for travel and particularly loved the two summers she spent working in New Zealand.

Shelby was an inspiration to her teammates, friends and family and she is so missed by all who knew her.
The family invites those who wish to attend an opportunity to say your farewell to Shelby on Saturday September 7, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home – Stayner Chapel, 7313 Highway 26, Stayner. Her family may not be present but invite you to provide a message of remembrance so they may have comfort remembering how Shelby impacted your life. A private family ceremony will follow with interment at Stayner Union Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at Nipissing University for her North Bay and ski community on Sunday September 15, 2019 at 1 o'clock at Monastery Hall, 165 Monastery Road, North Bay. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Nipissing Lakers Nordic Ski Team or the North Bay Humane Society would be appreciated. Georgian Bay Nordic shares in the stories of Shelby's positive energy and numerous contributions to the SOD ski community. Skiing allows us to see our best selves through challenge, strength, team work, success and struggle. Shelby had many lessons of life to share. We will think of her when we are on the trails, skiing our fastest for just 10 seconds more and in those quiet moments on the trail when life is at its best. To the Dickey family, you are in our thoughts.

Shelby is forever in our memories of carefree summer days at Sally’s pond - swimming out to the raft, walking up to Rogerson’s farm to see the cows and a big, loving family all crammed into Myra’s cottage.
Shelby stayed in touch through the years and we enjoyed her adventures from afar. Across the the miles we feel shock and sorrow at the sudden and terrible loss of a loving and bright soul. Our hearts and thoughts are with you all.

Rick & Keri: We are so sorry to hear of this devastating loss in your family. While we did not really know Shelby other than seeing her around the Highlands community in early days, we can only stand along side you as parents, weeping at this abyss of pain you must endure. Please know that our hearts are with you, and if it is of any comfort, I pray that you will know peace in the midst of pain. I trust your surrounding loved ones and those who may have also lost a child, and are the only ones who can know your pain, will walk with you closely as you move through the rest of time. Reach out for help as you go.
Love and Hugs, Lynda & Graeme Magor
