Obituary for John Alexander Wood

Wood, John Alexander
At home on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 in his 95th year. John of Stayner, much loved and devoted husband to Joan (née Noble) for over 72 years. Exceptional father to Greg of Victoria, B.C. Dear brother-in-law to Shirley (Gerald) Day, Jim Noble (Lucie) and Marg Wood (Bob). Admired uncle to many special nieces and nephews from coast to coast. Predeceased by his parents Clarence (Pete) and Mary Wood, and brother Bob.
John was a lifelong resident of Stayner with many talents and interests. He was an avid curler and hockey player. He was scouted by the Boston Bruins but had to decline their offer so he could work with his father and brother at the Stayner lumber yard “Clarence Wood & Sons”. John and Bob later formed the Wood Bros. Construction Co. and they gained a reputation as being quality builders for many of the homes in Stayner and Wasaga Beach. John’s community commitment was reflected in his dedication to the Stayner Volunteer Fire Department and 1st Stayner Scouts as Scout Master, coaching of many local hockey teams, support of Jubilee Presbyterian Church and receipt of a life membership in Northern Light Lodge, No. 266. John believed that you had to make your own fun and that music would always make you feel better. He mastered the trumpet in the Collingwood Kelty Marching Band, played the violin, guitar and piano for local dances with his buddy Bruce Poole and especially enjoyed touring with the Jubilee Men’s Chorus. Years spent at the unofficial “Cranberry Lake Hunt Club” supplied plenty of material for the uplifting humour that John loved to share. John held his private pilot's license for over 50 years and enjoyed the “perfect pleasure” of flying his airplanes well into his 80s. It was his genuine interest in people, that made John many friends through each chapter of his life. http://www.staynerheritagesociety.com/-in--conversation.html
To honour John’s wishes, private family funeral arrangements have been made through Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home - Stayner Chapel. If desired, donations may be made to either Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation-Campbell House, or Make-A-Wish Canada.
