Obituary for Eric David Lawrence

Lawrence, Eric David (1929-2022),
Eric passed away at the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital on February 16, 2022. He was born August 4, 1929, at the farm where he lived his entire life. Growing up he always had a dog by his side and his old dog Med sits waiting by his chair. Eric farmed on the 7th Concession of Sunnidale with his parents Everton and Annie and brought his bride Ruth home in 1949 to farm along side him. In those days farming was a tough way of living and he supplemented the income by working at Ivan Duffs Garage in New Lowell. As years passed and his family grew, he set up shop on the farm and became the neighbourhood “Fix It”. There were many late nights where the flash of the welder could be seen, or the ring of a hammer heard while he worked on a neighbours machinery so they could get back to the field the next day. In the 60’s when Sunnidale township established it’s first Volunteer Fire Department Eric was #6 to sign on and when fire equipment was needed to be built or repaired a lot of it found it’s way to the shop at the farm. In the late 60’s farming opportunities changed, and Eric and his family embarked into the Dairy Industry converting the barns from a mixed operation to solely dairy cattle. At the time he gave up his “Fix It” business for the more intense business of dairying but never stopped helping anyone who needed something fixed in a pinch. As little as 3 years ago you might have stopped in to find him in the shop. Farming was part of Eric’s life and the 80’s brought another change from dairying to a little less intense beef/cash crop and then in the 90’s two of his children joined him in different capacities and up to the last crop year he still shared his opinion for planting or the needed treatment for livestock. Age slowed him down but never stopped him. His parents came to the farm on the 7th Concession of Sunnidale April 21, 1923. Eric’s wish is for the farm to stay in the Lawrence name for 100 years. Eric is survived by his wife Ruth of 72 years, five of his children; Edith, Jeanette, Tom, Glen, and Allan, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Saturday May 21, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Stayner Union Cemetery. Remembrances to Canadian Cancer Society for Cancer Research or Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by his family.
