Obituary for Eldon J Cubitt

Cubitt, Eldon J.

Eldon James Cubitt was born at home on the outskirts of Stayner at 6934 Hwy 26 to his late parents, Earl and Georgina Cubitt, on July 31, 1944. He lived all his life in that home until moving into town in August 2007. In his lifetime he moved 2.3km. Eldon attended Byng Public School and then CCI.

Eldon was a natural farmer, having the eye to pick a good animal, whether dealing with cattle, pigs, or sheep. His Dad realized this gift and encouraged him to develop it. He bought his first purebred cow in 1960. He loved his cows and enjoyed showing and judging cattle and building a herd. At various times, Eldon was President of the Simcoe County Holstein Club, Simcoe County Milk Producers, and a member of Stayner, Collingwood, and Barrie Fair Boards.

Eldon married Janet Young on November 3, 1973. They worked hard building their farm and worked well as a team. Eldon raised a Top Bull in the United Kingdom. Hyways Star (Dalscend Cascade) had more sons go into A.I. than any other bull in the UK. He also bred and exported Top Bulls in Holland, France, and Germany. He also had the Top Milk Bull in Canada in the mid-1970s (Hyways Alex). Eldon achieved his goal of selling cattle to 25 different countries. Eldon wasn’t afraid to promote growth and advancements in the Holstein industry or to stand up for what he believed even if he was standing alone. For this, he was well respected in the industry.

Eldon loved God and his Church and was a man of faith. Over the years he held many different positions in the Church including Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Greeter, Youth Leader, and Children’s Ministry volunteer. Later he enjoyed his job of usher and especially prided himself on greeting new people and welcoming them to the Church. Eldon loved meeting people and asking questions. He said that was how he learned new things. He even learned how to use the computer at age 64 to check on crop prices.

Eldon loved working with young people. Over the years he was involved with youth at Stayner Baptist Church, Sixth Line Church, 4-H, and Stayner Minor Hockey. He believed in the 4-H motto “Learn to Do by Doing”. Over the years many young people from town worked on “the farm” where he tried to instill a strong work ethic in each young person.

Eldon was a loving father to son James and daughter Amy. He worked hard to provide for them and to instill in them good values. Eldon loved his family and would do anything for them. He enjoyed helping others and was a good friend. Eldon’s pride and joy were his grandchildren: Madison, Gavyn & Jennson Douglas, and Ryan & Cara Cubitt. He particularly enjoyed spending Saturday mornings at the arena with Ryan and Gavyn for hockey.

Eldon worked very hard and accomplished a lot, but above all he would have told you “I’d Rather Have Jesus Than Anything”.
