Obituary for Alexis Kaliopi Wawrow (Dellio)

WAWROW, ALEXIS KALIOPI
May 16, 1946 ~ September 13, 2022

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Alexis Kaliopi Wawrow. She passed peacefully while surrounded by family. She was 76. Alexis was predeceased by her parents, Isabel Rayner and Alexander Dellio, and her beloved husband, Romeo Wawrow. Alexis is survived and lovingly remembered by her children Cheryl (Scott), Michael (Andrea); siblings Richard (Lillian), Dianne (Ned); devoted partner David; grandchildren Amanda (Yama), Emily, Michael; great-grandchildren Lila, Jacob, Luna; nephew Adam (Venessa); and her dearest friend Dorothy (June).

Alexis graduated from nursing college, and worked as a registered nursing assistant for almost a decade at Riverdale Hospital. She then worked her way up to Assistant Store Manager at Loeb before retiring at 52. Alexis was an active and proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 582. Her mother served in World War II, and it was important for Alexis to honour her mother’s legacy.

Alexis was blessed to spend her retirement years in Wasaga Beach, travelling to sunny destinations over the cold winter months. She spent long stints in Florida, and shorter jaunts in Cuba, making memories with her sister who shared a love for the warmth of the sun. Alexis enjoyed a good game of scrabble on a traditional board, and in later years her favourite card games. She never forgot a birthday, and made sure loved ones received a special card. Alexis loved to dance, especially a good jive...and sing along with Roy Orbison, Fleetwood Mac, ABBA, and who could forget Neil Diamond! She loved to read a good book, kick up her feet, and relax. And there was always a glass of Chardonnay (or two, or three…).

Those who loved Alexis will remember a beautiful, free spirit with a warm laugh and easy smile. Alexis was unfettered by convention, non-judgmental, mischievous, easy to be around, independent (and stubborn), forgiving, and proud. She exuded joy, and loved life. Memories of Alexis include festive dinners with family where her lemon meringue pie was a favourite. Her traditional turkey dinner will be enjoyed by generations to come. Other fond memories include snap dragons, fireflies, lilac bushes, cardinals, ferns and wild flowers, the excitement of picking treasures, a cup of hot tea, and sitting on a log promising friendship for life. Alexis always wanted the best for her family.

A private celebration of life will be held at the family’s request. Online condolences can be made through Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home (www.carruthersdavidson.com). In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in memory of Alexis Wawrow to Hospice Georgian Triangle, 240 Erie Street, Collingwood, ON, L9Y 0X8 (www.hospicegeorgiantriangle.com/donate). The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the beautiful souls at Campbell House Palliative Residence for the care and deep compassion they showed Alexis and her family during her final months.
